(Theatre, In Development). TRANSCEND is a full-length original stage play written by Grace Carter, and conceived in collaboration with Grace’s transgender daughter, Talia Carter. The piece is inspired by the author’s personal journey through girlhood, womanhood, and motherhood and her transgendered daughter’s journey through transition. This is a story of mothers and daughters, the generational female identities that are handed down, and the trauma and resilience that come with them.
TRANSCEND is rooted in classical Greek texts (such as HOMERIC HYMNS and THEOGONY) bringing several characters into contemporary context: Demeter (the goddess of harvest and earth) Persephone (Demeter’s daughter and the goddess of spring and the underworld) and The Furies (goddesses of vengeance, retribution and mourning).
While I have extensive experience as a theatre director and performer, TRANSCEND marks my first time crafting original text and developing it into a full production. The deeply personal narrative structure will allow me to explore and expand a new emotional and historical range through a layering of theatrical, installation, film, movement, and soundscape techniques I’ve often utilized in individual productions but never synthesized in a singular work.
IN DEVELOPMENT: Staged Reading planned for winter 2025. Full production planned for theatre season 2026/27.
